Human Rights Campaign: Hillary Clinton Announces Her Support for Marriage Equality for All

Hillary Clinton Announces Support For Gay Marriage.

According to the Associated Press, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodhan VClinton announced Monday her suppirt for gay marriage in an online video by the gay rights advocacy group the Human Rights Campaign explaining that gays and lesbians are “full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship.” She continued to explain in the six minute video, “That includes marriage” both “personally and as a matter of policy and law.” Clinton’s announcement is sure to get people’s attention as people are already speculating another run for president in 2016 with other potential Democratic contenders being Vice President Joe Biden, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley who all back the right of same-sex couples to marry. The poll of public opinion has changed dramatically on this issue in recent times as Gallup polling last November showed 53 percent of adults approve of gay marriage while in 1996 only 27 percent did. The shift has also take place in political parties as Clinton and Obama in the 2008 presidential election backed civil unions not marriage, but in the 2012 election Obama announced his support of gay marriage so did Democrats who added it to their party’s official platform. The White House spokesman Jay Carney had this to say about Clinton’s announcement: “The president believes that anytime a public official of stature steps forward to embrace a commitment that he shares to equality, he thinks it’s a good thing.”

The GOP opposes gay marriage even though a several Republican stand outs have backed same sex marriages. On Friday, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman became the first Republican senator to announce his support saying he had a change of heart after finding out his son is gay, the Associated Press reports. More than a 100 Republicans submitted “friends of the court” briefs to the Supreme Court to overturn California’s Prop 8 law on same sex marriage ban as the court will discuss it next week. Also up for discussion is the Defense of Marriage Act defining marriage as between a man and woman which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996 who now believes the act to be unconstitutional and should be overturned. Hilary Clinton is a strong supports of gay rights not only in the U.S., but abroad as well despite keeping a tight lip during her tenure at the State Department however under her watch the U.S. government made it officially policy to promote gay rights around the world. For many citizens of the United States and abroad this has only been a dream up until now and the fight will continue on, but someday will end…one can dream right.

First Iraq Beauty Festival Held Since U.S. Invasion (PHOTOS)

First Iraq Beauty Festival Held Since U.S. Invasion (PHOTOS).

I think that this is what the country needs after so many years of violence and fighting. Iraqi hairdressers and beauticians gather in Baghdad to show off their talents  at the Make Up, Hairdressing and Fashion Show, a symbolic move to empower the people and break from fear that has gripped the country for years. The festival was the first of its kind since 2003 US led invasion and violent aftermath. This latest effort in a series of events has benefited the residents of this once dynamic city in the Middle East as a decline in violence has become more apparent. “The most important thing about this festival is spotlighting the brightness of Iraqi women, which has gone unseen by the world,” said Nadya Hamza Fuad, one of the organizers. She continued to explain,” Darkness used to dominate, and the light of beauty was extinguished 10 years ago, especially in women’s salons. Society has been held back because of the dark period.” The festival brought together a range of participants who as models were dressed to the nines and made up by beauticians and hairdressers who showcased their talents. The event was held in two conference rooms where experts showed the aspiring beauticians  tricks of the trades and best practices, while hairdressers showed their skills to onlookers before their models strutted on the catwalk. This is in sharp  contrast to years before, when tens of thousands were killed in insurgency ans sectarian wars that followed the ousting now executed dictator Saddam Hussein. Religious extremists in particular would target hairdressers, most of whom closed their shops, causing women, few of whom were veiled pre 2003, were forced to cover themselves and stay home. Even though violence has dropped, Baghdad attacks are still common and remains one of the world’s most dangerous cities. The one day festival was limited to word of mouth to avoid the attention of militants who would carry out attacks in Baghdad and across Iraq.

First Pope to leave office in 600 years – timesofmalta.com

First Pope to leave office in 600 years – timesofmalta.com.

It is rare in any lifetime to witness a pope being chosen from the college of cardinals but even rarer to see a pope leave before his time is up. In my young existence, I have witnessed both happen and will see another cardinal become a pope of one of the largest church organizations in the world, the Catholic Church. Say what you will, this will still go down in history and will be remember for a long time.

On Monday February 11, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI did the unthinkable and said he will resign on February 28, becoming the first pontiff in 600 years to take such a step. The leader of the 1.2 billions Catholics around the world, Pope Benedict in a statement read in Latin during a church council with cardinals said that he no longer had the strength to fulfill his duties which has shocked the world. As he says,”My strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.” Vatican officials explained that the statement had been translated into different languages before the Pope could make his announcement for immediate dissemination. The decision by the 85 year old German Pontiff who was elected to the papacy in April of 2005 has left many wondering what to do with two living Popes and has caused a paradox for the church as this has not happened in 600 years. A conclave of cardinals expected to be he;d in March will elect a new Pope. Arrangements are underway to provide Pope Benedict with a place of residence which may be a disused monastery on Vatican grounds.

Today on Ash Wednesday in Vatican City, the Pope celebrated his final mass as pontiff presiding over services hours after explaining his decision to the faithful. The mood in St. Peter’s Basilica was somber as the finality of weight of Benedict’s decision registered with thousands of the faithful present, but ended with a standing ovation as Pope Benedict exited for the last time as pope bring tears to eyes of those closest to the man. “We wouldn’t be sincere, Your Holiness, if we didn’t tell you that there’s a veil of sadness on our hearts this evening,” Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Benedict’s longtime deputy, told the pope at the end of the service, his voice breaking. The crowd yelled “Viva il papa!” as the Pope stepped off the altar. By March 31, the church will have a new pope elected as it marks the end of Lent and the celebration of Easter which commemorates the death and resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday.
Benedict explained to his flock why he broke with a 600 year tradition and decided to retire: “As you know, I have decided to renounce the ministry that the Lord gave to me on April 19, 2005…I did this in full liberty for the good of the church.” The Vatican has revealed his final days as pope saying he will attend a farewell ceremony with his cardinals then fly to the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo. Under the timetable, Benedict will be far from the Vatican when he ceases to be pope at 8p.m. on February 28 a deadline he decided on. The College of Cardinals will then organize a conclave where the 117 or so cardinals under 80 will vote to see who will succeed Benedict. Benedict’s final appearance will be on February 27 and is expected to draw a crowd and will allow the faithful to say farewell under happier circumstances than his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, died in 2005.

British Nursing Home Defends Practice Of Hiring Alleged Prostitutes For Aging Residents

British Nursing Home Defends Practice Of Hiring Alleged Prostitutes For Aging Residents.

You have to give them credit for using the idea after all a happy resident is a healthy one. Hey the elderly are alive not dead so why not have a little fun. Recently a British nursing home has had to defend their practices of hiring prostitutes for their residents regularly after local authorities found out. The Times of London reports the Chaseley nursing home in Eastbourne, England, regularly schedules sex workers who meet with residents in a special room with a red sock on the door where they can have privacy and caregivers check on them every 15 minutes. The nursing home mostly caters to ex-soldiers. The current manager Sue Wyatt told The Sun that these third party consultants arrange for these sex workers who provide the residents with what they need. Helena Barrow, the ex-manager, explained that these professionals offer both therapeutic services to the residents and help the staff. She continued to explain,”If you have a resident who is groping staff, one way of resolving that problem is to get a sex worker in who is trained to deal with that situation… The fact is sex workers are allowed by law to sexually enable people but care workers are not.” The Inquisitor reports that the East Sussex County Council is looking into the practice to make sure the residents are not getting harmed. Another nursing home Kildegaarden in Denmark also reportedly uses the practice but is greeted with skepticism by politicians reports Bloomberg. Slate magazine’s 2007 Sex Issue reports that a survey found the same year about a quarter of Americans between 75 and 85 were having sex. Earlier in the month, The Sun reported on a brothel planned and designed for disable clients with transportation provided by a non-profit Para Doxies in Milton Keynes, England. “People have the same sexual urges whether they’re disabled or not. Everyone deserves to experience and enjoy sexual contact,” said former madam Becky Adams, who will head up Para Doxies.

Violence Flares In Egypt After President Declares State Of Emergency In 3 States

Violence Flares In Egypt After President Declares State Of Emergency In 3 States.

Another bout of violence in the region as tension flairs between the president of Egypt and the people. In Cairo a man was shot dead Monday in the fifth day of violence that has killed 50 people so far and the Islamist president to declare a state of emergency hoping to end the blood shed. The emergency rule covers Port Said, Ismalia, and Suez and the army has been deployed in two cities allowing soldiers to arrest civilians approved by the cabinet. Protestors are accusing Morsi of high-handed security tactics the very same they ousted President Hosni Mubarak for. Even though Islamists won parliament nd presidential elections, the opposition has united against Morsi since last year when he moved to expand his power and push an Islamist leaning constitution. He is also being accused of leaning toward his Islamist allies and breaking a promise to be president of all Egyptians. Islamists say their rivals want to overthrow their freely elected leader by undemocratic means. The violence that erupted on Jan. 25 2012 marked the second anniversary of one of the bloodiest days leading up to Mubarak’s ousting. Instability in Egypt has many concerned in the western world where officials are concerned with key players who have piece deals with Israel. The political unrest in the key cities of Port Said, Ismalia, and Suez has further been marked by violence linked to the death penalties imposed on soccer supporters convicted of involvement in stadium rioting a year ago. Rioting in Cairo on Monday resulted in a 46 year old bystander being killed by gunshot as police threw tear gas into a crowd of stone throwing protestors. It is unclear who shot the man. The opposition Front has distanced themselves from these flare ups stating that Morsi should of acted sooner to impose security measures while other activists say that these measures could backfire on the president. Thousands of mourners joined funerals in Port Said for the latest death toll adding 7 more people who were killed on Sunday when residents joined marches to bury 33 others who were killed earlier most by gunshots. The emergency rule reminds many of the 30 year rule of Mubarak who kept Egypt under his thumb by implementing emergency rule allowing police to muzzle dissent and round up opponents even Morsi himself. Heba Morayef of Human Rights Watch in Cairo said that this implementation will undermine Egypt’s efforts to create a more efficient and respected police force.
