Remember this guy? Investigators say Holmes tossed two gas canisters and then opened fire during the midnight showing of the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20 last year, killing 12 people and wounding dozens. The problem in many of these cases is this guy if goes to trial would be a waste of time with the recent shooting and the fact he has already been tried in the court of public opinion as guilty. The information gained from this case should go toward improving security of these places and the way we go about identifying these type of people. The same debate that keeps coming up is gun control and mental illness which were present in every shooting, so why not address these two things.
Ma’lik Richmond and Trenton Mays, both 16 and members of the Steubenville High School football team, are charged with raping a 16-year-old fellow student last August, according to statements from their attorneys to local and national media. The photos and videos of the alleged act were posted on the internet by a computer hacking group Anonymous, a lawyer for one of the boys has said. According to their attorney, the boys fifth amendment right has been violated because of self incrimination through these videos and photos. Both sides also feel that the videos and photos of the crime make it harder to try these kids fairly since the town is a small town and the media is everywhere. The victim herself is a concern to both sides since the images keep replaying victimizing her again and again. Steubenville is 40 miles outside of Pittsburgh and is made up of only 19,000 people. The attorney for Richmond says the pictures and video do not show the same people. The other issue is the media is releasing misinformation about the images involved in the case and the children have already been tried in the media making it difficult to be tried fairly in the courts.
Like I said, the social media can be a good thing but also a very bad things as in this case when rumors are involved it can make it difficult to discern the truth. I am not saying these fellows are innocent but they will never know because the court of public opinion has already decided the court is just a formality.
This is what happens when we get involved in everyone’s business. Putin signed a bill banning Americans adopting Russian children stopping 52 children who already in the process of being adopted by American families. He proclaimed that the bill was a response to Obama signing a bill into law that calls for sanctions against Russians assessed to be human rights violators. Is it all about egos and not about the people nowadays. The US again is trying to dictate how the world should operate and again it backfires. Beside Putin, many Russians have taken offense to American adoptions because it makes it look like they cannot take care of their own. Well Russia, welcome to American we do the same thing to our own people unfortunately. Our government thinks we can fix other countries but we can’t seem to fix our own. Oh I forgot that is what Child Protective Services is for. We take kids out of loving homes (I like to say kidnap) then place them in an unfamiliar environment because we think that fixes the problem, but unfortunately the child ages out of the system and is left worse off. It is a sad state of affairs the world is in when all we know how to do is point fingers and never fix the problem just put a band aid on it.
Arming more people to protect others in a school will not help and certainly doesn’t address the underlying problems here. I know his heart is in the right place but this will add to the problems that are already mounting. Our government needs to stop focusing on just the gun violence and look at the reasons behind the violence. Address those and I promise you we will be much further along than arming more people.
