U.S. Gun Deaths Since Sandy Hook Top 1,280

U.S. Gun Deaths Since Sandy Hook Top 1,280.

Sad that this has happened since such a tragic event but I believe a lot of factors are playing into this whether accidental or intentional. Sincere Smith age two found his father’s gun on the living room table in Conway, S.C. It only took him a second to perish when he pulled the trigger putting a single bullet through his chest and out his back. The father had turned away to call Sincere’s mother who was visiting a friend. The father scooped him up and rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late. Now all they have is memories from that Christmas morning to remember the happy boy by. Two weeks earlier, the father had bought the .38 caliber handgun to protect his family from another potential break in. He has no answer for the national gun debate, but he wants that  second back. The father Rondell Smith has had deep regret since the incident and has considered taking his own life. The saddest part of the story is the little boy died alone as police interrogated the father eventually charging him with involuntary manslaughter which his court date is set for Feb. 8. There were 28 other shootings across the U.S. on Christmas including a soldier shot in his barracks in Alaska, a man murdered in a parking lot of a bar in Orrville, Alaska, a 23 year old shot at a party in Phoenix, a L.A. County Sheriff’s employee was killed in a drive by and a 2o year old man in Louisville, Kentucky was shot after walking his sister home. The last one had posted a message on his Facebook for all his friends and former classmates that had been gunned down that day. A 10 year old in Memphis, Tennessee was fatally wounded when his brother’s gun fell off the bed the boy was jumping on and discharged when the 12 year old brother picked it up. The older brother has purchased the gun after being bullied at school. There were 41 homicides or accidental gun deaths on New Year’s Eve and 54 people died of bullet wounds on New Year’s Day. The Huffington Post traced homicides and accidents through the US since the Sandy Hook Massacre on Dec. 14. There were 100 deaths the first week after the shooting and seven weeks after there were 1,280 gunshot homicides and accidental deaths. Including police involved shootings, the total gun violence tally adds up to 1,475 shooting incidents according to Slate. The list of death, destruction and heart break for family, friends and a nation continues. When will it stop? We as a nation have the power to stop such violence from continuing but when will we unite as one voice to stop this. It is our choice not the governments or special interest…IT IS OUR VOICE THAT WILL BE HEARD. Please read the whole article to find out about the many others that have perished due to the inaction by our government and raise your voice and speak for those who have been silenced by the violence whether accidental or intentional. We all have children, grandmothers, friends, aunts, uncles, etc. Now is the time for action not for silence.

NRA Puts Its Mouth Where Its Money Is With Ad Targeting Obama Kids – DailyFinance

NRA Puts Its Mouth Where Its Money Is With Ad Targeting Obama Kids – DailyFinance.

Before President Obama released his gun control proposal on Wednesday, opponents of the gun control plan were taking action. On Monday, Attorney General Edwin Meese  like others before suggested that the president could be impeached for such actions. The National Rifle Association also was busy releasing their ad that asked views, “Are the President’s Kids More Important than Yours?”which made comparisons between placing armed guards at school and the Secret Service detail assigned with protecting Sasha and Malia Obama. The ad called the president an “elitist hypocrite.” Not only has the president receives more than 30 death threats a day, Sasha and Malia have also been threatened as well I guess it comes with the territory. The NRA and its board of directors are not much different as they have also received death threats.

However, the NRA has a large financial stake in the game so no surprise they are hitting below the belt. The organization pulled in $227.8 million that includes $100 million in memberships and $71 million in contributions and grants many from gun manufacturers. The firearm manufacturers have a lot to loss with Obama’s proposal about $4 billion to be exact, bit I agree with AOL that going after his children who have nothing to do with this gun fight is ridiculous. The NRA and for that matter the gun manufacturers should be putting their efforts towards a long term solution not a lazy one. The problem here is not only gun and in a matter politicians with their fingers in several pies that only benefit them, but the need to re-examine the whole system and process in buying guns. Let’s face it NRA and gun manufacturers, regardless of whatever regulations are put into place people are still going to buy guns and unfortunately Obama and Congress no matter what gun measures you put into place like in all of these mass shooting if there is a will there is a way whether legal or illegal to get guns. This is what should be the focus to stop that.

San Francisco Gun Show Draws Huge Crowds Fearful Of Looming Gun Control Measures

San Francisco Gun Show Draws Huge Crowds Fearful Of Looming Gun Control Measures.

Daly City, south of San Francisco, saw a record number of gun enthusiast at the Cow Palace gun show this weekend because of concerns over stricter gun laws being put into place making it harder to get them. No one could walk away with a gun, but still an estimated 10,000 people packed the place on Saturday for the annual Crossroads of the West gun show. The increase interest in buying guns comes after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that claimed 26 lives and has increased dramatically around the nation.

California has some of the strictest gun laws in the United states requiring background checks, licensing of gun dealers, 10-day waiting periods, required written tests for all gun owners, recording of all firearm sales, handgun micro-stamping and a limiting each individual to one handgun purchase per month. Since the Sandy Hook shooting, gun shows have been increasingly criticized by locals and some towns are trying to block these gun shows form operating in their town.

Hazard Shooting: 2 Killed At Community College Shooting In Kentucky

Hazard Shooting: 2 Killed At Community College Shooting In Kentucky.

A gunman fired into a vehicle killing two people and wounded a juvenile Tuesday in the parking lot of an eastern Kentucky community college, Hazard Community and Technical College in Hazard. The campus was on lock down for over an hour and students were not allowed to leave until the premises was cleared by police to ensure no further danger. At the time of the shooting, there was 30 student students on campus. Three hours after the shooting at a news conference, no suspects have been identified and the semiautomatic pistol used was recovered. A male and female were dead already when the police arrived at 6 pm while the wounded female juvenile was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital. The police as well as college officials do not believe the violence was directly connected to the school and may have been the result of a domestic dispute. The relationship between the victims and shooter are not known.

Gene Rosen, Sandy Hook Hero, Harassed By Conspiracy Theorists Who Claim He’s An Actor

Gene Rosen, Sandy Hook Hero, Harassed By Conspiracy Theorists Who Claim He’s An Actor.

Must we sour the memory of a man who saved so many kids. People need to let these people of the Sandy Hook community move on and remember their fallen instead of adding insult to injury. Gene Rosen of Newtown, Conn., a good Samaritan who saved 6 survivors of Sandy Hook massacre, has been singled out by conspiracy theorist as being a liar and an actor. In the aftermath, Rosen was interviewed by media outlets and his face was flashed across televisions around the world. The sincerity of his heart break is in question by a conspiracy theorists group called “truthers” and this group has so far posted Rosen’s personal information, harassed him via email and phone, and created fake social media accounts with his name. Why do people need to be so mean and hateful towards a man that didn’t have to help these kids out at all but did? There is no truth in what these people are claiming and if they want to be mad at anyone be mad at the failure to keep these kids or anyone safe from these horrific acts.

Gun Control Legislation Must Not Include More Cops In Schools: ACLU Letter To Biden

Gun Control Legislation Must Not Include More Cops In Schools: ACLU Letter To Biden.

Democracy Now report the White House is considering providing $50 million in taxpayer money or federal funding to put hundreds of police officers and surveillance equipment in public schools. This and other avenues are being considered that could draw support from both parties since an assault weapons ban is most likely off the table.

The ACLU urges in a press release that the White House and Vice President Biden look elsewhere since in their opinion cops in schools would not make them safer just more oppressive. “As a mother, I’m especially attuned to the need to protect children from gun violence, but over-policing is not the solution,” Laura Murphy, Director of ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office, said in the release. “When police are put in schools, learning environments can be transformed into sites of law enforcement. The results can be devastating, particularly for students of color and those with disabilities, who we know are disproportionately pushed out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.”

The letter cites statistics from New York City where, according to the letter, schools with permanent metal detectors reported that 77 percent of incidents involving cops during the 2004-2005 school year were classified as “non-criminal.” Only 4 percent were classified as “major crimes against persons” and just 2 percent were classified as “major property crimes.”

I agree and disagree with the ACLU. I believe the police are not going to be effective but my opinion differs there. This oppressive environment the ACLU speaks of is ridiculous because I went to a school that had police and the kids actually felt safer. I think it is a false sense of security that worries me because a shooter like in all these cases carefully planned what it is they are going to do whether their is security or not. It should not have to get to the point that security is what Obama thinks is going to prevent this because with planning as in all these cases you can get around that. The $50 million the country doesn’t have should be save for less frivolous endeavors and not waste the taxpayer’s money. The focus should be more on plans to counteract these crimes, preparing schools for these attacks, and cracking down whether the NRA or special interest groups including Congress like it on guns and the process to buy a gun.

Obama weighs 19 executive actions on gun control ahead of Wednesday announcement | Fox News

Obama weighs 19 executive actions on gun control ahead of Wednesday announcement | Fox News.

President Obama is considering 19 different gun control measures that he could take without congressional approval that address gun violence. The plan will be unveiled on Wednesday amid claims that he is overstepping his role as president says republicans. The House Press Secretary Jay Carney explained that a significant part of the plan included congressional action but some of the measure can be done by executive order. The measures include aggressively enforcing existing gun laws, amping up national gun research, tougher penalties for gun trafficking offenses, making gun crime data more available and taking action against falsifying gun sale background checks. The president is still urging congress to pursue other avenues such as renewing assault weapons ban and pressing limits on high capacity magazines and stricter policies for background checks on gun sales.

While the White asks for more gun control measures after the Connecticut school massacre, the NRA has asked for increase in school security and closer look at entertainment and video games.  At the national level, advocacy groups and the NRA wants the Justice Department to crack down on falsifying background checks as only a small number are actually prosecuted. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says some 40 percent of gun sales happen with no background checks, such as at gun shows and by private sellers over the Internet or through classified ads.

It is sad to see our leaders still can’t agree on what to do in this situation. Gun violence happens everyday and the longer they take to fix the problem the more people die. To me it is all about looking the best and not what is best for the majority of the country no matter what party they belong to. The article and the representatives from the various groups have all admitted to the faults in the system but no clear strategy to solve the problem. I personally like what New York state has created which would be most restrictive gun law in the nation if signed by the governor. The measure called for tougher assault weapons ban, restriction on ammunition and gun sales,  address the unsafe storage of guns and create a more powerful tool to report mentally ill people who plan to use a gun illegally.
