Ma’lik Richmond and Trenton Mays, both 16 and members of the Steubenville High School football team, are charged with raping a 16-year-old fellow student last August, according to statements from their attorneys to local and national media. The photos and videos of the alleged act were posted on the internet by a computer hacking group Anonymous, a lawyer for one of the boys has said. According to their attorney, the boys fifth amendment right has been violated because of self incrimination through these videos and photos. Both sides also feel that the videos and photos of the crime make it harder to try these kids fairly since the town is a small town and the media is everywhere. The victim herself is a concern to both sides since the images keep replaying victimizing her again and again. Steubenville is 40 miles outside of Pittsburgh and is made up of only 19,000 people. The attorney for Richmond says the pictures and video do not show the same people. The other issue is the media is releasing misinformation about the images involved in the case and the children have already been tried in the media making it difficult to be tried fairly in the courts.
Like I said, the social media can be a good thing but also a very bad things as in this case when rumors are involved it can make it difficult to discern the truth. I am not saying these fellows are innocent but they will never know because the court of public opinion has already decided the court is just a formality.
